JALANDHAR: Traders and industrialist laid a siege to the residence of former minister and local BJP MLA Manoranjan Kalia to press for their demands of reduction in the property tax of commercial buildings, refund of VAT and other taxes levied on the business community and as well on the general public.
The traders and industrialists in hundreds led by Gursharan Singh, President of the Jalandhar Engineering Goods Manufacturers Association and Ravinder Dhir, President Punjab Vyapar Sena sat on dharna before the gate of the residence of the MLA. They shouted slogans against the SAD-BJP government and allegedly used abusive language even against the deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Manoranjan Kalia for not conceding to their demands.
The protesting traders neither submitted any memorandum of their demands to Kalia nor tried to meet him.
When contacted, Kalia said that he was not present in the house when the protesters started their dharna. As soon he came to the house and passed through the sit in dharna to enter into his house, neither he was he asked to listen to the problems of the protesting trade community nor any memorandum was handed over to him.
The protesters alleged that the government was trying to make lame excuses over their demands which would prove dearer for the SAD-BJP combine in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
