Sikh Diaspora condemned the racial abuse against a Sikh child in US

AMRITSAR: Sikh Diaspora today condemned the racial bullying of a Sikh boy in a school bus in United States of America and said more efforts were required to create awareness about the Sikh identity in US. The video of a young Sikh boy in the U.S. been racially abused by a group of school children that has gone viral on the net.

Akal Takht the highest Sikh temporal seats of the Sikhs condemned the incident. Taking a serious note of the incident Jathedar Akal Takhat Giani Gurbachan Singh told ANI that This is an unfortunate incident in US in which a school girl is shouting at a Sikh boy ‘terrorist’ considering him a Muslim. He said, “We had earlier told American government and Sikh Gurdwara management committees in US to ensure that Sikhs were not subjected to racist remarks”.

Jathedar said , “We are neither Hindu’s nor Muslims but we have our own distinct identity. Our robes, beard, style of living are different yet we are subjected to racist violence. US government should educate its people in schools and colleges about separate identity of Sikhs. Gurdwara Management bodies should also invite intellectuals for delivering speeches about Sikh’s identity, their religion etc.”

Dr. Pritpal Singh, convener Amrican Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (AGPC) told ANI over call from San Fransisco that that the AGPC and other Sikh organizations had already initiated a mega awareness campaign to apprise the citizens of the US regarding the identity of the Sikhs. ``The Sikhs are peaceful community contributing immensely to the development and welfare of the American society. There are sometimes incidents like these which are disturbing’’, saidDr.Pritpal.

He said the US government had also initiated number of programs to make the general people aware about the Sikhs. law enforcement agencies are taking these incidents seriously and book the culprits under hate crime. ``We are with the US administration and we will jointly work with the government to make the public in the US aware about the Sikh way of life’’, said Dr.Pritpal.

Manjit Singh GK president Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC)said that they have approached the government of India to take up the matter with the concerned authorities in USA. He said we also urged the fedral government in US to take prompt acchion and speedup their awearness drive about the Sikh living in US.

Parmjit Singh Sarna President Shiromani Akali DAl (Delhi) said, “ We should also move out of Gurdwara’s to bring awareness about the Sikh’s unique identity so as to avert such incidents in future. I appeal to US president Barack Obama to find a solution to the racist attacks on Sikhs”.
