Simranjit and Jaspreet win gold in Varsities Gatka

CHANDIGARH: Simranjit Singh of Panjab University Chandigarh earned his team’s first gold by logging 49 points in men’s single stick fight on the opening day of the 3rd All India Intervarsity Gatka Championship at Gymnasium Hall of University of Punjabi University in Patiala today.

Gurpreet Singh of Punjabi University, Patiala got silver with 41 points and Jasvir Singh of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and Samarpal Singh of Sri Guru Gobind Singh World University Fatehgarh Sahib got bronze medals with 34 and 23 points, respectively.

In the women's individual single stick fight Jaspreet Kaur of Punjabi University Patiala captured gold by logging 40.5 points. Manpreet Kaur of GNDU Amritsar won silver with 23 points. Kavita of Panjab University Chandigarh and Navneet Kaur of Sri Guru Gobind Singh World University Fatehgarh Sahib got bronze medals.

In single stick team events, Punjabi University team of Sarbjeet Kaur, Manpreet Kaur and Jaspreet Kaur won the first position., Manpreet Kaur, Jasmeet Kaur and Manpreet Kaur of GNDU Amritsar won second position whereas Simrat Kaur, Kavita and Navpreet Kaur from Panjab University Chandigarh pocketed bronze medal.

Thirteen University teams are participating in the competition. S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa former Central Minister and

Member Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa inaugurated the championship. Dr. Jaspal Singh, Vice Chancellor Punjabi University presided over the function. Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma, Director Sports, Mr Harcharan Singh Bhullar President Gatka Federation, Mr Harjit Singh Grewal General Secretary, and Dr. Baljit Singh Sidhu Finance Officer of the University were also present on this occasion.

Mr Dhindsa appreciated and congratulated the University for their endeavours to make Gatka competition regularize in AIU Sports Calendar of National University Games.
